Hey, It's me Sanchita, Your girl from the internet. Born and partly brought up in Guwahati, Assam. Today, As a writer I'm here to share my voice and enlighten people about the World of Fashion. I am here to share all facets of the Industry.
So, What is Fashion? People have various views on it. Is it a myth? A menace to society? A saviour? There are different schools of thought-
The Generic idea that fashion has in public perception can be categorized into 3 beliefs
Fashion is a Farfetched dream, exclusive to a certain group of the society
It is a waste of money and harmful to the environment
Some say it's the trendy wardrobe worn by models on the runways.
The truth? it is much more than that. Fashion is beyond visuals, the Runways, couture collections and Designers, It's a Phenomenon.
It is a nonverbal language, a transforming entity often described as a fast-forward cycle that evolves in new directions with fresh ideas and culture over seasons. It is a reflection of the economic, psychological and cultural state of a society. A creative expression of many souls on earth. For some, it's a sense of belonging and comradeship to certain groups, cultures and subcultures. It represents ideologies, values and principles.
As Indians- we come from different economic and geographical backgrounds, we speak different languages in our state, and we might as well dress differently than the other states, sometimes it means having contradicting ideas than each other, which often reflects on our wardrobe and the way we present ourselves in front of people.
We often see politicians, and pop icons making statements with their wardrobes on red carpets and rallies. Why do you think that is? We all have something to say and talk about, we all want to be known for something.
Because It is as relevant and significant today as it was thousands of years ago. You see, it's not only the way we see ourselves but also how we carry ourselves in society without speaking but communicating at the same time. Fashion is a socio-economic structure of humanity, sometimes manoeuvred by world politics.
The Fashion Industry is coveted and might make people feel like outsiders if not privy to the whole realm. It may seem accessible to a certain tier of society Anna Wintour in her documentary “The September Issue” said, “I think what I often see is that people are frightened of fashion and that because it scares them or it makes them feel insecure, they put it down.”
I grew up listening to many stereotypes about the Fashion Industry. Just like you, I thought this industry was for the glamorous kind. For someone coming from a working-class family and none of the single-family members from the industry, I can tell you how wrong I was.
I'm not sure if you would relate to me but, growing up, I was a Shy girl, I dealt with my low self-esteem and body image daily. You know, I was the kind of person who avoided sitting on the first row and would never raise my hands when the teacher asked questions, even when I knew the answer. Yes, I was that Girl!
I had major stage fear. My hands went cold at the thought of speaking in front of an audience. My friends and teachers often forced me to participate in singing and debate competitions. And yet this fear never left me. Have you ever experienced anything similar?
My communication skills also did not help as I would stutter in my presentations. Fidgeting with my hair while sweating nervously. I could not start conversations with people I didn't know. Made extra effort not to grab attention.
I missed many great opportunities because I lacked confidence. This made my life miserable. I became sad and frustrated and often secluded myself from everyone. My heart was filled with self-pity, regrets and guilt, guilt for not doing enough to break through my insecurities.
Fashion came as a saving grace in my life, and at that point in my life, I didn't even realize what an impactful decision I was making that would change the course of my life forever. I took Fashion Studies out of curiosity as It was an optional subject.
I reckon we were just about 10-12 Pupils in that class from the entire batch. I thought of it as a fun subject and that I would learn something new. Although We didn't have much provision for the Fashion department, the teacher was also not the best, but we made the best out of our situation.
It was then I decided that I wanted to choose Fashion as my career. I enrolled in NIFT. If I have to describe my NIFT experience in One World illuminating. The most eye-opening chapter of my life. Years spent in Nift were tiring but satisfying. It was the most life-changing experience of my life. I got an inside view behind the scenes of what goes on to become a designer. The fabrics and silhouette and the theme boards are just snippets of what we expect it to be.
Remember ! mentioned earlier that I had stage fear. Guess what, I had to forget all my past insecurities. Because being in design school there is a constant requirement to present your projects and designs to the jury or professors. Because the whole purpose of making a design collection is to sell. And why should anyone invest in your designer and your business if not communicated and presented well and accurately?
It's not like I woke up one day and the world was easy and transformed. I had to really change my mindset, carry myself well, speak fluently with confidence, even dress properly and change my style and aesthetic. I learned to become more expressive with my ideas and thoughts.
It was a huge learning process, you know the saying, “Rome was not built in a day”. It's human nature to think that when you want to achieve a goal you will get it in a short time. But in reality, you go step by step every day being consistent, giving your sweat and blood.
